Vinted Pro in the UK: who needs it, what it costs and the downsides
Buying to resell, or are your Vinted sales becoming a regular thing? Sooner or later the question of a Vinted Pro account comes up. Here’s what it is, what it costs and what it changes.
What is Vinted Pro?
Vinted Pro is the account for business sellers. According to Vinted’s Pro page, sole traders, non-profit organisations and companies can sign up, as long as they’re registered as a business. You sell on the same site, to the same buyers, but as a trader, with a trader’s obligations.
It isn’t optional: Vinted’s help centre says that if you’re a registered business, act on behalf of one, or sell to make a profit, you need to sign up as a Pro seller. Standard accounts can’t be used to sell professionally, and Vinted may restrict an account that does, then ban it permanently if nothing changes after a warning.
When should a casual seller switch to Pro?
It isn’t the number of sales that decides, it’s what you sell and why:
- You’re clearing out your wardrobe: you stay a standard seller, even with lots of sales.
- You buy to resell at a profit (charity shops, car boot sales, bundles, new stock in several sizes): that’s trading. Vinted puts sourcing items to resell for profit under its commercial selling rules, so you need a Pro account.
- Your yearly earnings go over the VAT threshold set by your tax authority: Vinted asks those sellers to join Vinted Pro and add a VAT number, or it restricts buying and selling.
Being reported to HMRC doesn’t make you a business either. Since January 2024, platforms send HMRC the details of sellers with 30 or more sales or roughly £1,700 in a year, but selling your own unwanted things is usually not taxable. See HMRC reporting for Vinted and eBay sellers.
Signing up: what you need
First you need a registered business: a sole trader, a company or a non-profit. Then, according to Vinted:
- Choose your starting point: sign up for Vinted Pro with your current account details, and your account is converted for you; or open a separate Pro account alongside your standard one, with a different email address and phone number.
- Enter your business details: name, registered address, email, phone number and any business registration numbers.
- Add your VAT number if you have one.
Converting is simplest once your ongoing orders are completed.
How much does Vinted Pro cost?
Vinted says Vinted Pro is entirely free, and that you can list as many second-hand items as you want, as often as you like. Vinted’s terms change: check the Vinted Pro page and the Pro terms before you sign up.
The real cost of selling as a business is elsewhere: tax and National Insurance on your profits, and the time spent keeping records. A tax calculator or an accountant will tell you what that means for you.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| You’re within Vinted’s rules: your reselling is above board | 14-day return right: the buyer can return an item within 14 days of receiving it |
| Free to sign up and to list | Buyers have 14 days, instead of 2, to raise an issue after delivery |
| No cap on the number of listings | UK consumer law gives buyers stronger rights when they buy from a business |
| Your standard account can stay alongside for personal sales | Records to keep and tax returns to file |
In practice, the downside that weighs most is the return right: build it into your prices and describe your items carefully to keep returns down.
Your obligations as a business seller
- Register with HMRC as self-employed (or run your company) and file your returns.
- Keep records of your sales, your purchases and your expenses.
- Watch the VAT threshold, and register for VAT if you go over it.
The current figures and rules are on gov.uk.
OnceAndSold for business sellers
OnceAndSold imports your sales from Vinted, eBay, Vestiaire Collective and the French and Belgian sites, and keeps your figures in the Statistics tab:
- Turnover, net profit and margin, by month, by platform and by category, with time to sell and best sales.
- Purchase price on every item, so the profit on each sale is worked out for you.
- Expenses: packaging, postage, subscriptions, receipts read by the AI, and Vinted bumps picked up from your Vinted invoices.
- CSV exports of your sales and inventory, ready for your spreadsheet or your accountant.
The invoices, sales ledger and URSSAF tools in the app are built for French micro-entrepreneurs (with a French SIRET number), so UK sellers will mostly use the figures and exports. The details: statistics and accounting and detailed accounting. Keeping your standard account next to a Pro one: what Vinted allows.
